Car insurance questions

How IDV is fixed, which add-ons earn their premium, and how NCB survives a policy switch.

Should I declare a lower IDV to cut premium?

IDV is the maximum payout on theft or total loss, so understating it saves a small premium and costs a large settlement. Keep it close to realistic market value.

Which add-ons are usually worth buying?

Zero-depreciation for cars under five years, engine protection in flood-prone cities, and roadside assistance. Consumables and return-to-invoice matter mainly on new or premium vehicles.

Do I keep my No Claim Bonus if I change insurer?

Yes. NCB belongs to you, not the policy. Carry the previous year's policy copy and a no-claim declaration to the new insurer at renewal.

Is third-party cover alone enough?

It satisfies the law but pays nothing for damage to your own car. Comprehensive or own-damage cover is what pays for accident repair, theft and natural calamity.

What happens if my policy lapses?

Driving becomes illegal, NCB is lost if the gap exceeds 90 days, and the insurer will require a physical vehicle inspection before issuing fresh own-damage cover.

Does a small claim cost more than it pays?

Often yes. Claiming a minor dent forfeits the NCB slab and raises next year's premium, so compare the repair cost against the discount you would give up.
